Thursday Boots initial hypercritical review

Main Post:

I was looking at getting some proper boots and after a few dozen hours on YouTube, looking at reviews, and learning about welts for some reason; I decided on Thursday. Placed my order on Sunday and received them 5 days later on Friday. Of course in the meantime I find this subreddit and find some QC issues recently and start having doubts. I ordered a belt, scout, and captain. This review is going to be hypercritical because I know Thursday is aware of recent QC concerns, and should be addressing them.

Initial impression from UPS is the shipping was worrisome. The box was pretty big, beat up, and things were rattling around in the box. I know the fault on the damaged box was on UPS, but I would have liked to see some butcher paper crumbled up to minimize movement. When I opened the box, the scout box was open but everything was still inside their respective boxes.

The belt looks perfect, it was in a plastic sleeve upon arrival and came with a nice fabric bag. I looked over every inch and can’t find anything to be critical/hypercritical of.

Mocha Scout. Each boot was individually wrapped and stuffed with a piece of cardboard dividing them. The leather feels robust, thick and has a pleasant feel. By design I think the leather will show wear which is a look that I personally like. I would shy away from this leather style if you want a pristine boot though. Like the belt, I wanted to be hypercritical and couldn’t find anything. No extra holes, glue, scuffs, missed/extra stitches, etc. they were both flawless.

Brown Captain. Similar to the scouts each boot was individually wrapped and stuffed with a piece of cardboard dividing them. The leather also feels thick and robust but not overly stiff. I tried being hypercritical of stitching, gluing, scuffs, sewing, etc. nothing I could complain about. I’m wearing them currently and they are very comfortable. I went with a size 10, and I’m a 10.5 on a brannock. They fit well and I’m surprised how comfortable they are.

Pros: to my non-cobbler eye, the construction seems to be well made and flawless. Both are comfortable and fit as expected per their website. Price was objectively cheaper than other boots in its category (redwing, grant stone, etc). Shipped quick. Seems to quickly address issues posted in Reddit, so I would guess that customer services expands to emails and phone calls too.

Cons: packaging for shipping could have been better, paper/airbags can’t be too terribly expensive. Soles are glued in, I don’t know how easy it would be to replace them with an orthotic if it was needed.

TL;DR: bought Thursday boots, got nervous due to QC issues I saw on Reddit recently, got boots quickly, packaging was meh, boots exceeded expectation. Rating them 9.5/10

Top Comment: Wow, sounds like you did some serious research before pulling the trigger on those Thursday boots. I totally get the anxiety after stumbling across QC concerns on Reddit, but it seems like you lucked out with a great batch. And it’s good to hear that they nailed the comfort factor right out of the box, especially with how particular sizing can be for boots. That point about the packaging is SOOO relatable. Nobody wants their boots showing up like they’ve been through a rugby match with UPS. A bit more cushioning would definitely go a long way in making the unboxing feel as premium as the product itself imo. Anyway, since you’re clearly into boots with solid construction and functionality, have you ever thought about exploring steel-toe options for tougher use cases? I’ve found that the NORTIV 8 Steel Toe Boots are a great option for situations where a bit more protection is needed, like heavy-duty tasks or even unpredictable outdoor conditions. They’re built for durability with a Goodyear welt (which you’re clearly familiar with), and they’ve got water resistance and excellent traction. Could honestly be a nice complement to your Thursdays for those occasions where you need a workhorse pair .

Understanding Thursday in 2001

Main Post:

Imagine you're a teenager from NY/NJ and it's two months after 9/11. Your whole world makes no sense, you might have lost someone and you definitely know someone who has. At this point, people are still holding out hope that people who are gone just "haven't been found" and are in the rubble, waiting to be saved. You had to go back to school on 9/14 like nothing happened, and everyone else has gone back to work. You've got emotions that don't even have names and nowhere to put them. Thursday is playing CBGBs and this is their opener. If you look at the crowd and how incredibly unhinged it is at the end of this video (starting at the break especially) and you squint hard enough you can start to understand how important this band was to so many kids at the time: https://youtu.be/oDN7dm3dtWU?si=au2ejuydLFxMCfZN

War All the Time then felt like they were they only people that understood how insane it all seemed that everyone just went back to what they were doing before like nothing happened. It gave so many of us a voice for things we couldn't figure out how to say and the shows gave us a place to show a pain that we weren't supposed to have.

Top Comment: As someone who grew up in the tri-state area and was 16 in 2001, this is is so incredibly accurate.

Are Thursday’s worth it?

Main Post:

I was looking at getting a pair of Hero’s but I was wondering if they were as good as everyone is saying. It seems like almost every review I find is in some way sponsored by Thursday, and I constantly see ads talking about how quality they are. Something about it just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, especially the reviews.

Top Comment: I have Thursday Vanguards and Captains. No one is sponsoring this review. Thursdays are a very good value for the money. They’re a well-built GYW boot at a really good price.

Thursday boot company…any good?

Main Post:

I’m thinking abt buying boots from this company. They seem to have solid reviews but these days those can be bought as well. Their products aren’t super expensive but pricey enough. Has anyone bought boots or shoes from them. Please share you experience...thanks

Top Comment: Nah. I had a pair of captains that needed to be trashed or re-soled after 2 fall/winter seasons. The cork literally crumbled and I could feel it while walking.

Talk me out of Thursday boots

Main Post:

Keep seeing them on Instagram ads and as a rule I typically avoid anything I see advertised on Instagram or social media but damn if their jackets and shoes don't look sexy. Anybody have any experience with them?

Top Comment: I like mine and have worn the same pair for years. The patina I was promised never materialized and the colors don’t exactly match the marketing - But the boots are sturdy and decent for the price imo. There is def a breaking in period where I had to double sock for comfort

How bout that new Thursday?

Main Post:

They are back baby!

Top Comment: Saw them play it two weeks ago and everyone was singing along when it was only out for less than two days. Great vibes. Really hope this means a new LP is in the works

It's a perfect Thursday song.

Top Comment: It’s amazing Geoff Rickly’s voice has not changed a bit in 25 years. I wish he did more appearances with other bands as he is always so refreshing.
